How to Pray the Rosary: A Guide for Beginners

This guide walks you through how to pray the Rosary step by step, with every prayer written out in order, the Mysteries to meditate on each day, and a few practical tips to help the habit stick. You can start today, even if you've never prayed a single decade.

What Is the Rosary?

The Rosary is a meditative prayer that walks through the life of Jesus and Mary. It's made up of five decades. Each decade is one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and one Glory Be, prayed while meditating on a specific event called a Mystery.

There are four sets of Mysteries: the Joyful, the Sorrowful, the Glorious, and the Luminous. Together they carry you through the life, death, and Resurrection of Christ, seen through the eyes of His Mother. You can read more about each one in our full guide to the Mysteries of the Rosary.

The Parts of the Rosary

Knowing the parts of the Rosary makes it much easier to follow along with your fingers as you pray.

• The Crucifix. Where you begin and end. You pray the Sign of the Cross and the Apostles' Creed here.
• The first large bead. The Our Father.
• The three small beads. Three Hail Marys, for an increase in faith, hope, and love.
• The centerpiece. The medal joining the loop to the crucifix strand. You announce each Mystery and pray the closing prayers here.
• The five decades. Each decade has one large Our Father bead followed by ten smaller Hail Mary beads.

How to Pray the Rosary Step by Step

Step 1: Get a Rosary

A physical rosary helps you keep track of your prayers and settle your focus. If you don't have one yet, don't let that stop you. You can count on your fingers or pray along with a guided recording until yours arrives. The important thing is to start. A pocket rosary is a simple way to keep one with you wherever you go.

Step 2: Begin with the Sign of the Cross

Hold the crucifix and pray:

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Step 3: Pray the Opening Prayers

Still on the crucifix and the first beads:

• Pray the Apostles' Creed on the crucifix.
• Pray the Our Father on the first bead.
• Pray three Hail Marys on the next three beads, one on each, for an increase in faith, hope, and love.
• Pray the Glory Be on the bead right below the centerpiece.

Step 4: Announce the First Mystery

First, choose which set of Mysteries to pray. You can pray any set you like, or follow the schedule the Church gives us:

• Monday & Saturday – Joyful Mysteries
• Tuesday & Friday – Sorrowful Mysteries
• Wednesday & Sunday – Glorious Mysteries
• Thursday – Luminous Mysteries

Holding the centerpiece, announce the first Mystery out loud or in your heart, like this: "The First Joyful Mystery: The Annunciation." Naming it helps prepare your mind to meditate.

Step 5: Pray the First Decade

(I'm left-handed so yes, I go clockwise around the rosary... righties usually go right-to-left.)
Next:

• Pray one Our Father on the large bead.
• Pray 10 Hail Marys, one on each of the 10 beads, while meditating on the mystery.
• Pray the Glory Be while holding the space in between the tenth Hail Mary bead and the next Our Father bead.
• Pray the optional Fatima Prayer in the same spot.

To meditate, picture the scene of the Mystery while you pray. Imagine standing beside Mary at the Annunciation, or watching Jesus carry His cross. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back. This takes practice, so be patient with yourself.

Step 6: Pray the Remaining Four Decades

Continue around the loop the same way for each decade:

• Announce the next Mystery.
• Pray the Our Father on the large bead.
• Pray ten Hail Marys on the small beads while meditating.
• Pray the Glory Be, then the optional Fatima Prayer.

Step 7: Pray the Closing Prayers

When you reach the centerpiece again, you've prayed all five decades. To close, hold the centerpiece and pray the Hail, Holy Queen, then make the Sign of the Cross.

And that's it, you've prayed one entire rosary!

The Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

The Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The Fatima Prayer (optional)

O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.

The Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Tips for Praying the Rosary as a Beginner

When you get distracted, keep going. Distractions are normal. Gently return your focus to the Mystery and pray on. A guided recording can help you stay with it while you learn.

Start small if the full Rosary feels like a lot. Praying one decade a day is a manageable place to begin. A pocket rosary is designed for exactly this, one decade at a time.
