Our striking St. Joseph medal depicts the holy man holding the Christchild close to his cheek, representing his intimate relationship with Jesus. He also holds lilies, which represent his great purity. The toddler in his arms has one hand raised in a blessing of peace and holds a globe in the other.
St. Joseph was given the unique vocation of husband to the Blessed Virgin Mary and foster father of the Child Jesus. He came from the line of David, which means he had royal blood, but at the time he lived the Davidean family was very poor.
He experienced his first vision after learning Mary was pregnant. An angel appeared to St. Joseph in a dream, revealing the Divine cause of the pregnancy and encouraging him to take the Virgin Mother into his home.
He received his second angelic message not long after the birth of Jesus, cautioning the holy patriarch to flee the country in the wake of the slaughter of the Holy Innocents. St. Joseph obeyed promptly and without question. He led the Holy Family on a dangerous journey through the desert in order to take refuge in Egypt. Once the danger had passed, an angel told Joseph it was safe to return home to Nazareth.
Scripture does not say a lot about St. Joseph beyond this point, but we do know he was a skilled carpenter and trained young Jesus in the craft. He is the patron saint of fathers, families, immigrants, the Universal Church, craftsmen, and his intercession is often invoked in finding employment.
St. Joseph, pray for us!
