I’m a convert to the Catholic Church and did not grow up with Advent at all. I did not grow up with time to prepare my heart and mind for the coming of our Lord Jesus at Christmas time.
Over my childhood years, Christmas Day felt more like the culmination of a marathon season of parties rather than just the beginning of the celebration. We did not prepare ourselves to welcome Jesus, but lived like we were celebrating his birthday before the day even arrived.
Coming into the Church, observing the four weeks of Advent instead of all the celebration has been somewhat of a difficult change for me. While our secular culture has been partying for weeks, we are called to wait in stillness.
The readings from the second week of Advent reminded us to “prepare the way of the Lord.” We are preparing our homes and our hearts to welcome him properly, in a way befitting of Emmanuel, God With Us.
But it is hard to wait. It is hard to watch the celebration, knowing it isn’t time yet. Christmas is so close! Just days away! There is still so much I need to do in my own heart and mind to prepare for his arrival. Just a few days left to prepare the way of the Lord!
The readings for this Sunday remind us of how close Christmas is.
The Psalm for today has us repeat four times, “Let the Lord enter, He is King of Glory.” When I first read the Psalm, the word “Let” stuck out to me like it was in an extra bold type.
I have never considered this final step in the preparations for Christmas. We have to let Him in. Mary welcomed Him with the words, “Let it be done to me according to Your word” (Luke 1:38).
We have prepared our homes and our hearts. Now we have to welcome Him and let Him into the space we have prepared. He is Emmanuel. He is God with us. He longs to be with us.
Come Lord Jesus, come be with us in our homes and in our hearts these last few days of Advent. We can’t wait to celebrate with you, King of Glory!

I prefer our rosaries that have the Immaculate Heart of Mary centerpiece because it is gorgeous in every color and the weight is perfect. Right now, my absolute favorite is the Refuge of Sinners. The name reminds me daily that I need her help. Mother Mary, pray for me!
