Saying Yes Like Mary: A Reflection on The Annunciation

This article was originally shared with our email subscribers as part of the Marian Mondays Series, a weekly reflection on the mysteries of the rosary by Jonathan Conrad, owner and founder of The Catholic Woodworker

In meditating on The Annunciation, we read this beautiful passage from Luke 1:38 where Mary says:

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

While Mary’s fiat makes Jesus’s divine birth possible, her “yes” is a human “yes.” She accepts God’s vocation for her life on Earth and she seeks to serve Him in that role as best she can.

Like Mary, we’re also given vocations from God and, with Our Lady’s help, it’s worth reflecting on how we’re filling our roles from time to time.

As we start this new week, I hope you can take a moment to prayerfully reflect on these questions with me today:

1. How do I seek to serve God through the unique experiences and opportunities that my vocation affords me?
2. How can I use my thoughts, words, and actions to show that I am a servant of the Lord?
3. Do I ask Mary for the graces I need when I find it hard to live out my vocation?

Asking For Mary’s Intercession

When we examine how we’re doing from time to time, we can refocus our thoughts and actions and reorient them towards Christ with Mary’s help.

Holy Mother, pray for us today as we strive to joyfully live out our vocations for God’s greater glory. Amen.
