It is the question we hear more than any other about Bishop Fulton Sheen, and the answer surprises people every time. No. Not yet. He is Venerable and will be declared Blessed at his upcoming beatification in Peoria. To be canonized a saint, the Church needs a second miracle through his intercession after the beatification. The order runs Servant of God, Venerable, Blessed, Saint, and Sheen is right at the threshold of that third step.

What Canonization Means
When the Church canonizes a saint, she declares with certainty that the person is in Heaven and can be held up as a model and intercessor for the whole Church. It is the Church's most solemn act of recognition.
📅 Current Status
Where Sheen Stands Right Now
Venerable, and approved for beatification. In 2019, Pope Francis approved the first miracle through his intercession: the recovery of a stillborn boy named James Fulton Engstrom near Peoria. The beatification was set for December 2019, then postponed. In February 2026, the Vatican re-approved it, and the ceremony is expected in Peoria this year. At that Mass, he becomes Blessed Fulton Sheen.
The First Miracle
The miracle approved for Sheen's beatification involves James Fulton Engstrom, a boy born stillborn near Peoria whose recovery was attributed to prayers asking for Sheen's intercession. Pope Francis approved it in July 2019. One miracle is required for beatification. A second, occurring after beatification, is required for canonization.
After beatification, one thing remains: a second miracle, medically unexplainable and theologically tied to Sheen's intercession, happening after he is declared Blessed.
These get investigated with serious care. Doctors have to rule out any natural explanation. Theologians have to confirm the recovery is tied to prayers asking specifically for Sheen's help. When such a miracle is approved, the Pope can schedule the canonization.
If that day comes, Sheen would be one of the first American-born men declared a saint. For American Catholics, that is a big part of why this cause carries the weight it does.
On the Church's Caution
The Church's careful process is not doubt about whether Sheen was good. It is her method of confirming, for the whole world and for all time, that someone is in Heaven. Sheen is on that path. The beatification is the clearest sign yet of where it leads.
You will hear Catholics talk about "Saint Fulton Sheen" like it is settled. We understand the instinct. His holiness was evident in his life, and plenty of people are confident his cause will go all the way.
The Church's process exists precisely because that confidence, however well-founded, is not the same as her solemn declaration. The declaration is what the beatification, and eventually the canonization, provides. Sheen is on that road. He is not at the end of it yet.

Study Guide: Venerable, Blessed, and the Road to Sainthood
Question 01Is Fulton Sheen a saint?
No. He is currently Venerable and will be declared Blessed at his beatification in Peoria. Canonization as a saint requires a second approved miracle after beatification.
Question 02What are the four steps in the Catholic canonization process?
Servant of God (cause opened), Venerable (heroic virtue recognized), Blessed (one miracle approved, beatification Mass), Saint (second miracle approved, canonization). Each step carries a formal title.
Question 03When was Sheen's cause for canonization opened, and what title did he receive?
His cause opened in 2002 in the Diocese of Peoria. At that point he was named Servant of God, the first formal step in the canonization process.
Question 04When was Sheen declared Venerable, and what does that mean?
In 2012, by Pope Benedict XVI. Venerable means the Church formally recognizes that a person lived a life of heroic virtue. It is the second step in the process.
Question 05What was the miracle approved for Sheen's beatification?
The recovery of a stillborn boy named James Fulton Engstrom near Peoria, Illinois, attributed to prayers asking for Sheen's intercession. Pope Francis approved it in July 2019.
Question 06What title will Sheen hold after his beatification?
Blessed Fulton Sheen. He can then be venerated publicly, usually within a particular region or community. He does not yet hold the title Saint.
Question 07What is required for Sheen to be canonized as a saint?
A second miracle through his intercession, medically unexplainable and theologically tied to prayers specifically asking for his help, occurring after his beatification. Without it, he remains Blessed.
Question 08What does it mean when the Church canonizes someone as a saint?
The Church declares with certainty that the person is in Heaven and can be held up as a model and intercessor for the whole Church. It is the Church's most solemn act of recognition for a deceased person.
Question 09Why does the Church investigate miracles so carefully?
Because canonization is a declaration for the whole world and for all time. Doctors must rule out any natural explanation. Theologians must confirm the recovery is tied to prayers specifically invoking the candidate's intercession.
Question 10Why would Sheen's canonization be historically significant for American Catholics?
He would be one of the first American-born men declared a saint. The American saints canonized to date have been predominantly women or missionaries from other countries. An American bishop of Sheen's prominence would be a significant first.
Question 11Why do some Catholics already call Sheen a saint?
Because his holiness was evident in his life. The instinct is understandable. The Church's process exists because personal confidence, however well-founded, is not the same as her solemn declaration for the whole Church.
Question 12What makes the official Fulton Sheen beatification rosary from The Catholic Woodworker distinctive?
It was developed with the Diocese of Peoria specifically for the beatification. Each rosary is numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity endorsed by the Diocese. Pre-orders open June 15, 2026.
