The Lines That Make You Stop Mid-Task
We have a few of these taped up around the shop. You spend enough time making rosaries and you start collecting the lines that make you stop mid-task. Few preachers ever talked about Our Lady and the Rosary the way Bishop Fulton Sheen did. What follows are verified passages from his published works — The World's First Love, Life Is Worth Living, and A Treasure in Clay — with a little of what each one has meant to us.

On the Rosary
"The Rosary is the book of the blind, where souls see and there enact the greatest drama of love the world has ever known."Fulton J. Sheen, The World's First Love
Sheen loved that the Rosary teaches what books cannot. You do not have to be a scholar to pray it. You hold the beads, you say the words, and the Mysteries of Christ's life open up in front of you. The learned and the simple end up on the same ground.
"The Rosary is like that. While the prayer is being said, the heart is not hearing music, but it is meditating on the Life of Christ all over again, applied to his own life and his own needs…"Fulton J. Sheen, The World's First Love
His answer to anyone who calls the Rosary repetitive. The words do not change. What changes, decade after decade and year after year, is the person praying them. Sheen understood the Rosary as a way of returning to the same scenes of Christ's life until they start to feel like your own.
For Sheen, the Rosary was never a detour away from Jesus. It was the straightest road to Him, because it kept the soul next to His Mother, and she always points to her Son.
On the Blessed Mother
"God, who made the sun, also made the moon. The moon does not take away from the brilliance of the sun. All Mary's light is the reflected light of Christ."Fulton J. Sheen, The World's First Love
This may be his clearest answer to anyone worried that honoring Mary takes something from Christ. The moon has no light of its own. Everything it shows us comes from the sun. Same with Our Lady. A simple image that settles a long argument.
"The level of any civilization is the level of its womanhood."Fulton J. Sheen, Life Is Worth Living, Second Series (McGraw-Hill, 1954), p. 173
Sheen saw in Mary the model of what every soul, and every society, could become. His devotion to her was never sentimental. It was serious, and it reached all the way into how he read the world.
"The Blessed Mother reflects her Divine Son; without Him, she is nothing. With Him, she is the Mother of Men."Fulton J. Sheen, The World's First Love
Sheen was precise about this. Mary's role is entirely relational — she exists in relation to her Son and in relation to us. Without Christ, she is nothing. With Him, she is everything we need her to be. That is the theology behind the devotion, and it is why Sheen's Marian piety was never sentimental.
On Prayer and Perseverance
"I resolved also to spend a continuous Holy Hour every day in the presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament."Fulton J. Sheen, A Treasure in Clay
He kept that resolution for more than 60 years, from his ordination in 1919 to his death in 1979. The Rosary was woven through it. He credited that habit, not his talent, with everything that mattered in his public ministry. We show how to begin the same rhythm in our guide to Fulton Sheen's daily Holy Hour.
How to Actually Use These
A good quote is a seed. Sheen's words work best when you carry them into prayer rather than leave them on the page. Pick one that hits you, and bring it into your next Rosary. Let it shape how you pray a single decade.
Try praying the first Joyful Mystery, the Annunciation, while holding his line about the moon and the sun. Or pray a decade slowly, treating each Hail Mary as the language of love he described, and notice whether it feels different by the tenth bead.

Sheen left the Church a whole treasury of words on Mary and the Rosary. The most fitting way to honor them is the obvious one: pray. We made the official rosary for his beatification with the Diocese of Peoria, numbered, with a certificate of authenticity. Pre-orders open June 15, 2026.
